From 1976

on May 13, 2012
We found this in grandma's under-the-sink stash a few days ago, labeled from 1976:

Can you see it? Can you see what's NEW about this bottle?

NEW Trigger Sprayer action.

And an EXCLUSIVE Mist Sprayer. EXCLUSIVE.

Hm.... I see now where my packrat nature comes from.

But it's been hanging around our family since 1976. It's practically a member of the family! It should at LEAST get to hit its 40th birthday! It's a keeper.

She thanks her Jesus for the daisies and the roses.

The perk of working in a flower shop: sometimes the beauty gets to follow you home. :)

Aren't these gorgeous? My boss said I should bring some home to grandma for Thanksgiving. :) This particular variety (High & Magic) has been incredibly lovely and have been very long lasting considering how open they are. The ones in the center are called Cinnamon and are a pretty peach on their own, but here the ones in front simply steal the show. We've really been enjoying them and I wanted to show them off.

God did pretty stellar with these, didn't He?

Tis the Season!

I'M SO EXCITED.

Christmas, Christmas time is here....

Why yes, that is my Christmas tree. Already up. In my room. Bwahahahaha, SO HAPPY.

That is also where my desk used to be. So that's obviously gone now too. Which was a process in itself, ha. Anytime grandma and I say something like "Yeah, I'll go get the hammer!," you can already know hijinks are going to ensue.

But my tree is up and I'm super pleased with it. I recently remembered that we have a massive amount of bright blue ornaments that we no longer use, so I think I'll pair those with some other bright colors  and just go for whimsy fun. I'm excited.

Also, a word to the wise: toothpaste in the eye HURTS. Don't do it.

A little Q&A.

on November 8, 2011
Why you no blog as much?
Work has been very...challenging lately. That's a good word for it. Stressful isn't the right word and neither is bad (although there have been days). Challenging is about right. And so I've pretty much been coming home humdrum and going to bed early in order to survive the next day intact.
In fact, I should be in bed right now.
We have, however, hired a new girl! And I'm very excited about this. I think this will work out well. And if it does, it will help a lot. She began training with us today.

So what's been going on?
EARTHQUAKES. Crazy EARTHQUAKES. We had one Friday night at 2:00 AM that legitimately scared me - it was the largest one I had ever felt, and it was late at night and suddenly the whole house was shaking. However, the next night was when we had the record setting one for the state (5.6) and since we were in the city I guess we didn't feel it at all. Bizarre. Another 4.7 one happened tonight and wasn't that bad, but the phenomena still feels strange.
Oh, and there were tornadoes everywhere in the southwest part of the state, and we're in a tornado watch until 4:00 am. Welcome to Oklahoma!

Also, I would like to know the power of that wind gust that just passed by my window, because it sounded like a train was trying to come through.

How was Halloween?
When I celebrated the actual holiday itself, it was good. I saw most of my kiddos the Saturday night before and enjoyed dinner with them as well, so that was wonderful. Actual Halloween night however was...bad. We were slammed at work, I actually had to go back in and finish something up and I loathe driving on Halloween night due to all the kids running around. And I was exhausted. So... I was glad when that was over.

Wait! Speaking of holidays! I bought my first Christmas tree!
I had mentioned to grandma that I would like a tree in my room this year, but they're always so expensive it just didn't seem like a good idea. But she kept an eye out and this past weekend Big Lots had a 7 foot tree, pre-lit on sale for $50, which was too good a deal to pass up, so I splurged and I'm very excited about this. Now the decision of how to decorate it arises. Since we do the front tree in traditional greens, reds & golds I'm looking for something different. Usually my room is decorated in brighter colors with lots of penguins at Christmas, so that may be a guiding factor.
My grandma is awesome.

Now it is certainly bedtime. You should pray no trains come through my window.

C&H Love: The Leaf Pile.

on October 5, 2011
Grandma and I spent part of yesterday evening raking leaves. As I was walking around with the large clawed leaf-gripper things, all I could think of was this:

(Ha, and check out that date of publishing! Totally unintentional. It was meant to be.)

Only Three More Months....

on September 25, 2011
Do you know what three months from today is?

Think about it.... thiiiink about iiiiit....

Christmas!

Actually, I hadn't put that together at all. Grandma was the one who pointed it out to me earlier.

That's going to go by so quick.

So I've decided to officially begin Christmas shopping October 1st. After last year's debacle of starting too late (halfway through November) I'm not repeating that again. And sure, I should have gone ahead and started in September, but for some reason that just seems so early... That's barely even fall. And then half the time I worry I'll forget where I've put them that early on anyway. October, however, that's kind of the kickoff to the holiday season: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas... I can do that.

Has anyone else started yet? Or do you work better at the last minute?

Fourth of July huzzah! Time with Family

on July 2, 2011
Grandma and I had a lovely time this afternoon spending it with the Kime's & the McBride's. It can be tough to get everyone together anymore, with all our schedules, so time spent is sweet. I'm lucky to be close to my cousins on both sides, especially when you consider how large that number has grown over the years (including kids & spouses: 23.)

I did manage to snag more than one picture, but unfortunately they're not uploading right now. (I'm so bemused by my router. I no longer understand how it works at all.)

However, one was emailed to me, so for now it'll do.

I promise, Lexie is not crying. She was actually giggling. I promise.

Although with that scary man in the background, it might cause one to wonder. ;)

The Return of Internet Access

I am, to a degree, back.

My computer appears to be dead. :( Blue Screen of Death and all.

I am currently typing away on a laptop kindly lent from Brad who has been at the center of this computer ordeal with me. I'm very grateful for the return of internet access. I'm also glad to be borrowing a laptop specifically - its potentially what I'll be buying next, instead of a desktop. I've never owned a laptop. And I'm not really that crazy about laptops. So this is a good way of seeing what I think of it.

Currently, I don't care for the keyboard, but I'm sure I could adjust to that.

In other news, its the Fourth of July weekend. Grandma and I don't get too into the holiday - fireworks worry me even in the best of conditions. With this years drought, I'm much less inclined to be around them. Maybe if we feel crazy we'll go watch the ones at the casino.

All that being said though, I'm always excited about a three day weekend. Yaaaaay.

Any computer advice?

Summer Movies: "I need a horse."

on May 15, 2011
Thor is quite possibly my favorite Marvel film to date, although Incredible Hulk still might edge it out simply because of Edward Norton. I'll have to watch them all again to be sure. I don't think that will be a problem.
But in all seriousness, Thor is really well done and really funny. You should go see it. (and if you need someone to go with, call me.) Be sure to stay after the credits.

Grandma and I had a great weekend. Saturday was beautiful - and free - so while I wasn't too excited initially about mowing the lawn I'm really glad its done with. Especially since at the very end our mower was making very strange, probably very bad, noises and we barely came in under the wire before it sounded downright terrible. I suspect its merely that the fuel is old, since we finally got it fixed not that long ago. Oh well. At least the yards are finished for right now. Everything else looks good to go.

This past Friday was also Amy & Ashlyn's piano recital. Their playing was quite beautiful, they looked beautiful and they made it through the whole recital beautifully (it was long.) Quite proud of all four girls.

No, seriously. Call me if you go see Thor.

"Ashlyn, you look gorgeous!"
"I know. That's why I play the piano."

When the storms roll in.

on April 23, 2011
Storm season has finally arrived in the state. Its true that we need the rain (and still do) but I've genuinely missed hearing the claps of thunder that are common throughout our spring season. I love storm season. But I also have a healthy respect for it and I know it does no good to be foolish. Things always seem to happen the one time you don't plan for them.

Last night the Plumbs & Pucketts were having their Easter gathering. I was already planning on running a few errands before heading their way, so I was in town longer than I would have originally been. As an unexpected storm began to blow its way in, Regina & I dashed to gather all the leaves she'd raked before the rain destroyed all her hard work and I hurried to the house to grab my Easter dessert.

When I ran into the house I asked grandma if there were any chances of tornadoes.
Sure
, she said, we're under a watch.
Hm.

I know Tornado Watch does not equal There Is A Tornado, but the air felt different and I was skeptical.

Then I think you should come with me to the Plumbs.
Oh honey, I'll be fine, I'll just get in the closet.

....

No coercing would get her to come with me, and knowing she would never let me stay, I formed a backup plan. I knew the Nickerson family was coming into town for dinner and there would be some extra helping hands nearby.

I know this sounds extreme, but if the weather gets bad, please make sure my grandma gets to safety.

This is the beautiful thing about my friends and loved ones in the area: I have so many people I could call for backup in situations like this and they would be more than gracious. I have no doubt she would be completely protected with any of them.

I was driving towards the interstate ramp when the sirens suddenly went off. I could tell we were in no immediate threat, but the priority was still to get back home. As I was doubling back and trying to call someone, anyone, who would have an eye on the weather all the signals were jammed and I could get through to no one.

So as I rounded the corner to my street there in my driveway was my pastor getting out of his car. He had already arrived to take my grandma to safety, just in case. My knight in his now drenched blue long sleeved shirt.

It wasn't that I was surprised to him - I had already tried to call him and let him know I was on my way. But the sheer kindness of it all still warmed my soul. This is a great example of the beautiful friends & family I'm fortunate enough to have. These are the kinds of things they do. They're amazing.

The storms passed and I was able to make it out for Easter fun. I've really missed my kids (I love those sweet faces) and I was so happy for the chance to see everyone. But currently the reminder of how much love I'm surrounded by is even sweeter. Thanks, guys, for being awesome. And to Gary for being my superhero.

Warm weather.

on April 6, 2011
Oh my goodness. It was beautiful outside today. According to the 7-day forecase, we appear to have stabilized a bit in temperature for awhile and I'm oh so excited. This 80 degree weather is gorgeous.

Unfortunately, we are still in an extreme drought. I just finished watching the 10:00 news where there were two major wildfires going on in the north throughout the day, one of which is still burning. We're getting pretty desperate for rain, especially before the summer hits. Please pray for rain.

Nonetheless, today was productive. Grandma & I have started playing in the outdoors, which is nice. Our lawn mower is finally fixed from last summer. I have now sprayed sections of our backyard with weedkiller. We're mentally mapping out our flower garden.

I am determined to grow cosmos again this year.

One of last year's few surviving blooms...

Last year we used old seed, not to mention they were also flooded by all the spring rain we received and almost taken over by grass. So five blooms survived. This year I'm hoping they'll grow like crazy.

And I'm quite fond of the color our hydrangeas turned last year, due to all the coffee beans grandma fed them...

Last year's hydrangea....

Since hydrangeas change their color based on the soil their in, this year could go either way. They could remain that beautiful shade of purple, or return to their original tone of pink. Either way, they've been growing so well they're gorgeous either way.

Like Grandmother, Like Granddaughter

on June 19, 2010
Snapshots in time from Calamity Ranch 3 (which sounds like a video game title.)

Last night Grandma was talking to my aunt on the phone and assured her she had been taking "brain food." When my aunt asked what it was, Grandma suddenly realized she couldn't remember.

Today I learned that if do not focus on walking while on the treadmill, if I let my mind wander to almost anything else I will nearly fall off the side of it. And since apparently I don't learn from my mistakes this will nearly happen three times. I'm hoping that whenever I finally do get thrown off backwards and land on the floor that I don't crash into anyone.

This evening Grandma & I were leaving a restaurant when I absentmindedly started walking to the passenger side of the car, despite the fact that I had drove, and just about the time I realized my mistake Grandma nearly strangled herself by running into a taunt wire from a telephone pole.

Grace 1 and Grace 3 in action. Seriously, should we even be allowed in the same house? :)
